Character Bio:

NAME: Sylvie Devereux
AGE: 28
SPECIES: Human

BACKGROUND & HISTORY: Sylvie Devereux, (sometimes called Via in her most intimate friendships and relationships) grew up in Lyon, France, the daughter of a French artist mother and an ex British navy officer. She is an only child, an avid lover of music, and has grown up running the gauntlet between an incredibly strict father and a soft-hearted mother. Her parents met when her father was on leave, and what was originally meant to be a month of light hearted fun turned into something more permanent when Sylvie’s mother found out she was pregnant, and though they’ve grown to care and respect each other, there was never much in the way of real love between them. Her father’s time in the armed forces left him with a bad hip and a bad neck and a crippling gambling problem. He managed to keep it under wraps for most of her life, but when she was 18 and getting ready to graduate, he fell into debt beyond anything he’d ever managed before. The first thing to be sold was the piano Sylvie’s mother had taught her to play on. One thing led to another, and he ended up borrowing money from some dangerous people he knew back in the UK, with no hope of ever being able to pay it back.
Sylvie graduated, not oblivious to her father’s problems but determined not to let them affect her, and paid her own way to England with years of pocket savings in order to attend the Royal College of Music in London. She managed to spend a blissful 4 years living in a shitty apartment in London, working a cafe and playing her music, until eventually, her father’s powerful “friends” got wind of her and decided to use her as a bargaining chip. She didn’t know exactly what her father had gotten into at the time, but this is where she first discovered magic, while it was being used against her as a means of getting her father to pay up. She donated everything she had to help him pay off the debt, and then as soon as she was free, she bolted to Paris and cut off all ties with her family. The experience left her at her lowest, until a year later at 23 she met Shea Cooper, and things started to look up. Until suddenly they didn’t anymore. She ran from him, and she spent four years trying to forget him until she couldn’t anymore, and now she’s on her way to Siren Cove.

PERSONALITY: Sylvie has inherited both sides of her parents traits; her mother’s softness as well as her father’s determination and stubbornness. She loves music more than anything, her instrument of choice being the piano, though she's also got a knack for photography and makes some money on the side selling prints. Her fondest memories are of her mother teaching her to play, and one of her worst is watching her father sell her most prized possession. Once, she was a lot lighter, and always managed to see good in people. As a girl she was always quick to laugh and enjoyed playing small pranks on her parents around the house, but since her time in London it’s like she’s been smothered in a blanket. Outwardly, she still does her best to smile and act like nothing has happened, but it doesn’t light her up inside like she used to. The only time she came close to this again was her time with Coop in Paris, and her single biggest regret is that she couldn’t hide there forever. She no longer trusts easily, and she’s wary of anyone who seems to know her outside of her own introductions, given her past experiences. Sylvie will be quick to lend a hand, but it will take some coaxing to get her to open up anymore.

OPINION OF THE RIVALRY: She knows literally nothing about this, she’s just getting to town.

LIFESTYLE: Having spent most of her money digging her father out of jams, Sylvie is living on modest savings that she’s managed to conserve since she cut ties. She’s found a small cottage on the outskirts of town that she’ll be renting, and will be aiming for a job asap.

POWERS & ABILITIES: She’s human. Her first taste of magic was not a good one at all. It’s been used violently against her and she in all honesty never wants anything to do with it again. Coop told her what he was and what he could do shortly before proposing, and she thought she could handle it, she really did. In the end it turned out to be too much of a reminder of something she’s trying desperately to forget, and she’s spent a lot of time pretending like magic doesn’t exist despite what she’s seen. In the four years that Coop and her have separated, she had a change of heart and decided the only way to get over it was to stop ignoring it. Since then, she’s been researching, and while she’s come to the decision that she was harsh on Coop and maybe it’s not all bad, she still cringes around it.
